Open source​

Just like Tasks.org for Android, the new desktop app is 100% open source and ad-free, licensed under the GPLv3.

Name your price​

Taking a 70% pay cut and draining my savings to build a task list app sounds like a midlife crisis. And maybe it is.

To get my wife to sign off on this plan, I needed a path to profitability. So, just like Tasks.org for Android, the desktop app can be unlocked with a name-your-price subscription, with a minimum of $1 per year.

One subscription unlocks both Android and desktop. If you already have a Google Play subscription or GitHub Sponsorship, you already have access.

Support​

The desktop app is a work in progress, and feature parity with Android is going to take a while. If you run into any trouble, please contact me.

You may see warnings during download and installation because I have not set up build signing yet.

Microsoft Edge users: Bypassing the download warning

Microsoft Edge's SmartScreen will block the download by default. To proceed:

  1. Open Edge downloads (Ctrl+J)
  2. Find the blocked file and click the ⋯ menu → Keep
  3. On the popup, click ⌄ → Keep anyway

Starting with version 14.9, Google Play users will be asked to agree to it when opening the app.

Note for F-Droid Users

If you downloaded Tasks from F-Droid, these terms do not apply to you unless you sign in to a Tasks.org account for synchronization. Your use of the app remains governed solely by the open source license (GPLv3).

The open source license already covers the basics, but a proper terms of service fills in the gaps.

Like the privacy policy, the terms of service was generated by Termly.io based on Tasks.org's existing feature set. It covers the standard stuff you'd expect:

  • Acceptable use (don't do crimes with the app, please)
  • Liability limits (I'm one person and I don't want to lose my house)
  • The usual legal boilerplate that keeps lawyers happy

The terms do not reflect any change in functionality or behavior. Tasks.org works exactly the same as it did yesterday.

Regarding "Expansive" Language​

Because these terms are generated from standard commercial templates, you might see broad boilerplate language (such as restrictions on "reverse engineering" or competition) that feels out of place for a free software project.

I have manually added a "Supremacy Clause" to the Terms of Service. This explicitly states that the GPLv3 license takes priority. Your rights to study, modify, and distribute the Tasks.org source code remain absolute and unaffected.

Don't panic! Nothing has actually changed about how Tasks handles your data.

The old privacy policy was, shall we say, charmingly handcrafted, and it was time for something a little more official-looking. Think of it as Tasks putting on a nice blazer for a job interview - same person underneath, just slightly more presentable to lawyers.

What's different? The words on the page.

What's the same? Everything that actually matters:

  • I only collect personal information if you use the Tasks.org sync service
  • I don't sell your data to anyone

This update is purely for legal housekeeping. The new policy was generated by Termly.io based on Tasks.org's existing feature set, so that if anyone ever asks "hey, do you have a real privacy policy?" I can confidently say yes, without crossing my fingers behind my back.

  • Support for Android 6.0 has been dropped. Tasks now requires Android 7+
  • EteSync v1 support has been deprecated and will be removed soon! This release removes the ability to create new lists, rename lists, change list colors, and delete lists. Please migrate to EteSync v2, or use the EteSync Android client to continue synchronizing EteSync v1 data with Tasks
  • Fixed a time zone issue when selecting a 'Repeat until' date in the recurrence picker
